Starting Your Mother of the Bride Speech needs to include a couple of really important components. These are;
1) To Introduce Yourself – Most of the wedding guests will know you but there will be some relatives and friends of both the bride and groom you haven’t met yet.
2) Give a Heartfelt Welcome – This is to welcome your wedding guests and telling them how you appreciate their being there to share this special day and secondly to welcome your new son-in-law to the family.
Mother’s Speech Introduce Yourself.
Before introducing yourself make sure you take a big breath, arrange your notes or speech cards and begin to talk slowly and clearly.
The first rule in public speaking is “slow down”. When we are anxious or nervous we tend to race our speech patterns and speak faster.
Taking a breath or a pause can work wonders. You can even tell the wedding guests that public speaking is not you favorite thing in the world and that you are feeling a little nervous. 99% of people will relate to you. Not many people are comfortable with public speaking.
Telling your guests that you are nervous serves two purposes, one people will be concentrating on everything you say – you will have their undivided attention and two, it makes you human and they will be a lot more tolerant of any mistakes you might make.
Mother of the Bride Speech – Your Welcome.
Making your wedding guests feel welcome is most important.
Always thank those who have traveled distance and pay tribute to the elders, such as grandparents or great aunts and uncles, who have attended your daughter’s special day.
Paying Tribute to Your New Son-In-Law.
Make sure that when you speak about your new son-in-law to pay him the highest respect. In a way you already have by giving the seal of approval by him marrying your daughter.
Even if the relationship has been strained for any reason, this is not the time to share your feelings.
Try to think of a positive memory involving your son-in-law or share any positive story or feeling you had about him when your daughter first bought him home to meet you.
An Extra Speech Tip.
Don’t be tempted to speak about the cost of the wedding, people already know that a wedding costs a small fortune, they know they are regarded highly by the bride and groom to even get an invitation – there is no point mentioning it.
Next, we will look at what you should include in the next part of your speech, talking about your daughter and mentioning the brides siblings or step siblings in our article titled Write Your Mother of the Bride Speech. Pt 2.
